RESUMEN

Preparing the next generation of pharmacists to succeed in practice and provide premier care starts with ensuring pharmacy education standards are met and align with innovative practices and that education incorporates topics that are important to promoting health. For example, recent reports link endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) to numerous diseases such as reproductive disorders, metabolic diseases, and developmental abnormalities. Considering the suboptimal awareness and knowledge about EDCs, it is imperative to provide public health education through a pharmacy curriculum. The objective of this study was to evaluate student pharmacists' perceptions of the impact of a role play activity on their knowledge of EDCs and counseling skills. A secondary objective was to explore student pharmacists' perceptions of how role play might impact their future career as a pharmacist. A retrospective qualitative study consisting of a lecture, a pre-brief, a low-fidelity simulation centered on role-play, and debrief to develop knowledge of EDCs to practice counseling skills, and a post reflection was implemented to explore this aim. Third year student pharmacists who were enrolled on the public health elective course were eligible to participate in the study. All reflections were de-identified, imported into a qualitative software, Dedoose®, Version 9.2.6 and thematically analyzed using an inductive approach. Thematic analysis revealed three master themes, which tell the story of an initial lack of familiarity with EDCs that was rectified by the lecture and low-fidelity simulation. In the first theme, we can see that all of the participants noted their positive perceptions of the low-fidelity simulation, especially the role playing on a topic they lacked familiarity with. In the second theme, participants revealed the activity's impact on their performance or behaviors. Finally, the third theme explores the future implications of a pharmacist's impact on public health. This novel study contributes to a growing body of literature on the impact of pharmacy education practices and instruction on public health. The findings suggest that pharmacy educators might consider incorporating role playing instruction for public health topics, EDCs, or topics not traditionally taught in the pharmacy curriculum.

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a frequently occurring sexually transmitted infection in adults and is associated with various cancers that can affect both males and females. Recently, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) expanded its recommendations for the HPV vaccine to include patients aged 27-45 years with shared clinical decision-making. A commonly reported obstacle to receiving the HPV vaccine among adults is a lack of healthcare provider recommendations. Considering the suboptimal HPV vaccine coverage figures and noting that the vast majority of hesitancy research has been conducted among children and adolescents, limited research is available on the adult perception of HPV vaccination in pharmacies. This study focuses on understanding adults' opinions and perceptions regarding the role of pharmacists in the uptake of the HPV vaccine and awareness of its availability in the pharmacy setting. METHODS: After receiving approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), the qualitative study was initiated using virtual focus groups (FGs). Concepts from the Transtheoretical Model, the Health Belief Model, and the Social Cognitive Theory guided the study design. The corpus of data was collected in 2021 and 2022 by two researchers, and a third party transcribed the FGs to avoid any biases. The data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's Thematic Analysis. RESULTS: Out of 35 subjects that participated in six FGDs, most identified as female, with ages ranging from 18 to 45 years. The following four themes emerged: (1) HPV vaccine awareness; (2) stigmas leading to reduced education and vaccination rates; (3) education preferences; (4) follow-up in vaccination series reminders and preferences. CONCLUSION: Participants' views of the HPV vaccine and the ability to receive the vaccine in a pharmacy are influenced by a myriad of factors. Common factors include improved awareness, preferences for educational modalities, avoiding stigmas associated with HPV vaccination, combating gender-focused biases, and preferences for the location of vaccination. These barriers provide opportunities for pharmacists to promote and enhance vaccine uptake.

RESUMEN

There is an established need to translate evidence-based practices into real-world practice. Community pharmacists and their corresponding pharmacies are well-positioned to be effective partners as researchers seek to study and implement practice-based research. Challenges exist when partnering with community pharmacies which can vary based on the study type, the nature of the community pharmacy, and stakeholder groups (i.e., patients, staff, leadership, physicians). This commentary seeks to describe these challenges and provide recommendations that can help mitigate and/or overcome these challenges. Recommendations are provided for team structure, communication, research tools/technology, motivational factors, workflow, and sustainability. These recommendations are based on the authors' experience in partnering with community pharmacy for opioid-related research in a variety of study types, states, and pharmacy environments.

Background: There exist substantial patient barriers to accessing medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including travel distance, stigma, and availability of MOUD providers. Yet, despite these barriers, there exists a subset of patients who possess the requisite motivation to seek and remain adherent to treatment. Objective: To explore patient-derived goals in MOUD treatment-adherent patients. Methods: This study used in-depth interviews with patients receiving methadone who were enrolled in opioid treatment programs (OTPs) across Tennessee. Participants were recruited from 12 different OTPs to participate in telephonic semi-structured interviews to a point of saturation. Participants had to be adherent to treatment, in treatment for 6 months or greater, and English speaking. Analysis occurred inductively using a constructivist approach to Grounded Theory. Results: In total, 17 patient interviews were conducted in the spring of 2021. Participants described goal setting across three general stages of treatment: (1) addressing acute physical and emotional needs upon treatment entry, (2) development of supportive structure and routine to develop healthy skills facilitated by treatment team, and (3) identifying and pursuing future-focused goals not directly linked to treatment. A Proximal Goals in MOUD Framework is introduced. Conclusion: In this qualitative study on patient reported goals in MOUD it was found that goals are transitory and relative to the stage of treatment. Further research is needed to better understand goal evolution over the course of treatment and its impact on treatment retention.

The opioid epidemic has been an ongoing public health concern in the United States (US) for the last few decades. The number of overdose deaths involving opioids, hereafter referred to as overdose deaths, has increased yearly since the mid-1990s. One treatment modality for opioid use disorder (OUD) is medication-assisted treatment (MAT). As of 2022, only three pharmacotherapy options have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating OUD: buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone. Unlike buprenorphine and naltrexone, methadone dispensing and administrating are restricted to opioid treatment programs (OTPs). To date, Tennessee has no medication units, and administration and dispensing of methadone is limited to licensed OTPs. This review details the research process used to develop a policy draft for medication units in Tennessee. This review is comprised of three parts: (1) a rapid review aimed at identifying obstacles and facilitators to OTP access in the US, (2) a descriptive analysis of Tennessee's geographic availability of OTPs, pharmacies, and federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), and (3) policy mapping of 21 US states' OTP regulations. In the rapid review, a total of 486 articles were imported into EndNote from PubMed and Embase. After removing 152 duplicates, 357 articles were screened based on their title and abstract. Thus, 34 articles underwent a full-text review to identify articles that addressed the accessibility of methadone treatment for OUD. A total of 18 articles were identified and analyzed. A descriptive analysis of Tennessee's availability of OTP showed that the state has 22 OTPs. All 22 OTPs were matched to a county and a region based on their address resulting in 15 counties (16%) and all three regions having at least one OTP. A total of 260 FQHCs and 2294 pharmacies are in Tennessee. Each facility was matched to a county based on its address resulting in 70 counties (74%) having at least one FQHC and 94 counties (99%) having at least one pharmacy. As of 31 December 2022, 17 states mentioned medication units in their state-level OTP regulations. Utilizing the regulations for the eleven states with medication units and federal guidelines, a policy draft was created for Tennessee's medication units.

While there is limited research in the field regarding the various dimensions of co-use of alcohol and opioid medication, particularly related to co-use and levels of severity, our research has shown 20% to 30% of community pharmacy patients receiving opioid pain medications are engaged in co-use. Co-use of alcohol and opioid medications is a significant risk factor for opioid-related overdose. Community pharmacy is a valuable yet underutilized resource and setting for addressing the US opioid epidemic, with an untapped potential for identification of and intervention for risks associated with co-use of alcohol and opioids. This commentary describing the "Co-use of Opioid Medications and Alcohol Prevention Study (COAPS)" offers an innovative and promising approach to mitigating serious risks associated with co-use of alcohol (risk and non-risk use) and opioids in community pharmacy. COAPS aim 1involves adapting an existing opioid misuse intervention to target co-use of alcohol and opioid mediations. COAPS aim 2 involves testing the adapted intervention within a small-scale pilot randomized controlled trial (N = 40) to examine feasibility, acceptability and preliminary efficacy of the intervention versus standard care. COAPS aim 3 involves conducting key informant interviews related to future implementation of larger scale studies or service delivery in community pharmacy settings.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of substance use disorders (SUDs) is an alarming problem in the United States; however, only a fraction of patients receive treatment. Stigma from both healthcare professionals and society at large negatively impacts SUD treatment. There are limited data regarding the perceptions of healthcare students on SUD stigma as a health disparity. METHODS: We conducted a concurrent mixed-methods study among students enrolled in six health-related colleges at one mid-south health science center in the US over 3 months. Both an electronic survey consisting of 17 close-ended questions and researcher-led focus groups were conducted to understand their perceptions of stigma and SUDs. The research team followed the six steps recommended by Braun and Clarke regarding the data that aimed to capture associations between categories and extract and conceptualize the themes, and thematic analysis was done using Dedoose® (Manhattan Beach, CA, USA) qualitative software, which facilitated all the codes being kept organized and compared the frequency of codes across categories. RESULTS: A total of n = 428 students participated in the survey (response rate = 13%), and n = 31 students took part in five focus groups. Most student respondents, on average, either agreed or strongly agreed that: stigma currently exists in the healthcare field; stigma can lead to patients' not receiving the appropriate care for an SUD; and stigma can lead to lower quality care provided to patients with SUDs. Two themes were identified based on the thematic analysis: (1) additional training is necessary to better equip students for addressing SUDs in practice and (2) suggestions were formed to develop synergy between didactic and clinical rotations to improve SUD training. CONCLUSIONS: It is evident that students perceive the stigma surrounding SUDs as a detriment to patient care. Opportunities may exist in professional training programs to more seamlessly and intentionally weave SUD treatment and management concepts throughout the curriculum, as well as to empower students to operate in the complex regulatory scheme that exists for SUDs in the US.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid over-prescribing has led to changes in prescribing habits and a reduction in the amount of opioid prescriptions per patient. Deprescribing has proved to be an effective way of decreasing the number of opioids patients are receiving, and pharmacists are in the optimal position to provide these services for their patients. However, student pharmacists require additional education and training to be able to understand their role in deprescribing opioids upon entering the profession. METHODS: Student pharmacists at three United States of America schools of pharmacy were invited to participate in virtual focus groups about deprescribing opioids in Fall 2021. A trained qualitative researcher conducted the focus groups, which were audio-recorded and later transcribed verbatim for thematic analysis. Two independent qualitative researchers coded the transcripts using both inductive and deductive approaches. The researchers then met to identify, discuss, and describe themes from the data. RESULTS: Thematic analysis revealed two themes: (1) perceived obstacles and enablers to initiate deprescribing for opioid medications and (2) additional pharmacy curricula experiences are necessary to better equip student pharmacists to address deprescribing. These themes emphasize the challenges student pharmacists face as well as opportunities to enhance their knowledge to be practice-ready. CONCLUSION: Varying educational approaches to teaching deprescribing in the pharmacy curriculum, including objective structured clinical exams, interprofessional education, and motivational interviewing, should be further assessed.

The Medicare Parts C and D Star Ratings system was established to improve care quality in Medicare. Previous studies reported racial/ethnic disparities in the calculation of medication adherence measures of Star Ratings in patients with diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. This study aimed to identify possible racial/ethnic disparities in the calculation of adherence measures of Medicare Part D Star Ratings among patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and diabetes, hypertension, or hyperlipidemia. This retrospective study analyzed the 2017 Medicare data and Area Health Resources Files. Non-Hispanic White (White) patients were compared to Black, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander (Asian), and other patients on their likelihood of being included in the calculation of adherence measures for diabetes, hypertension, and/or hyperlipidemia. To adjust for the individual/community characteristics, logistic regression was used when the outcome is the inclusion in the calculation of one adherence measure; multinomial regression was used when examining the inclusion in the calculation of multiple adherence measures. Analyzing the data of 1438,076 Medicare beneficiaries with ADRD, this study found that Black (adjusted odds ratio, or OR = 0.79, 95% confidence interval, or 95% CI = 0.73-0.84) and Hispanic (OR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.75-0.89) patients were less likely than White patients to be included in the calculation of adherence measure for diabetes medications. Further, Black patients were less likely to be included in the calculation of the adherence measure for hypertension medications than White patients (OR = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.78-0.84). All minorities were less likely to be included in calculating the adherence measure for hyperlipidemia medications than Whites. The ORs for Black, Hispanic, and Asian patients were 0.57 (95% CI = 0.55-0.58), 0.69 (95% CI = 0.64-0.74), and 0.83 (95% CI = 0.76-0.91), respectively. Minority patients were generally likely to be included in the measure calculation of fewer measures than White patients. Racial/ethnic disparities were observed in the calculation of Star Ratings measures among patients with ADRD and diabetes, hypertension, and/or hyperlipidemia. Future studies should explore possible causes of and solutions to these disparities.

Background: Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) in the U.S. provide an approach to organize and incorporate trained public health and medical professionals and supplement the current public health workforce. During the COVID-19 pandemic, MRCs provided immunizations, educated the general public, and assisted with community screening and testing. Reports of MRC activities are publicly available; however, their challenges are not well discussed. Therefore, this exploratory study aimed to identify some challenges that MRC units faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional pilot study aimed to address the composition, recruitment, and training of MRC volunteers and their responses during the pandemic. The survey consisted of 18 close-ended questions across 3 domains: (1) structure and designation of the MRC unit, (2) recruitment and training opportunities for volunteers; (3) demographics; and 2 open-ended questions. Results: A total of 568 units across 23 states were invited to participate in this exploratory study with only 29 units completing the survey. Out of 29 respondents, 72% were female and 28% male, 45% were nurses, 10% were physicians, and 5% were pharmacists. Retired members were reported in 58% of MRC units, while 62% reported members being active professionals. Qualitative analysis revealed two themes - Obstacles faced by MRC units and Interdisciplinary Composition. Conclusions: In this exploratory pilot study, we identified the challenges of MRC units during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings indicated variation in composition and type of volunteers at different MRC units that may be considered in planning for future disasters and emergencies.

BACKGROUND: In the last several decades, vaccine hesitancy has become a significant global public health concern. The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has been on the United States of America (USA) market since 2006, with extended approval up to age 45 granted in 2018. To date, there is limited research evaluating barriers and facilitators related to HPV vaccine initiation among adults and the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals' vaccine-related behaviors. This study's main objective was to characterize the contributing factors that could promote or inhibit HPV vaccine uptake for adults. METHODS: A qualitative approach consisting of focus group discussions (FGDs) was used for this study. The FGD guide was informed by concepts from the Transtheoretical Model, Health Belief Model, and Social Cognitive Theory. All virtual FGDs were led by two researchers, who recorded audio for data collection. The data were transcribed by a third party, and the transcripts were imported into Dedoose® software and analyzed using the six steps recommended by thematic analysis. RESULTS: A total of 35 individuals participated in 6 focus groups over a 6-month period. Thematic analysis revealed four themes: (1) Intrinsic motivators for HPV vaccination, (2) Extrinsic motivators for HPV vaccination, (3) Vaccine promotion strategies, and (4) Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on vaccine hesitancy. CONCLUSION: Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors play a role in influencing HPV vaccine uptake, and such considerations can guide efforts to improve the odds of HPV vaccination in working-age adults.

Community pharmacists have become increasingly exposed to opioid use disorders in recent decades. However, both pharmacist training and traditional practice environments have not been adequate to prepare the pharmacist for both the patient care needs and regulatory barriers of patients experiencing opioid use disorders (OUD). As a result, there is a need to increase pharmacists' awareness of both the overall patient experience as they navigate their OUD and the role of the community pharmacy as a touchpoint within that experience. To this end, a Community-Centered Patient Journey in Drug Addiction Treatment journey map was developed with expert insights, clinical experience, and in-depth interviews (conducted in spring of 2021) with 16 participants enrolled in licensed opioid treatment programs in Tennessee. Patients, policymakers, clinicians, and academic researchers were involved in the map development. Lived experiences of key informants were captured via in-depth interviews. A consensus decision-making approach was used throughout the patient journey map development process. The final patient journey map illustrates a non-linear pathway, describes the central role of the patient's community, and emphasizes three major "pain points" within the system (access, adherence, and affordability). Future research should investigate the impact of such a journey map on pharmacy personnel's knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.

In the last two decades in the United States (US), the previous research has focused on medication optimization, including polypharmacy. Polypharmacy is associated with several negative outcomes, which may be resolved by deprescribing medications that are no longer necessary. Although deprescribing is a critical aspect of a pharmacist's role, some studies have demonstrated that student pharmacists are less familiar with their future role in deprescribing. Thus, this study aimed to explore student pharmacists' perceptions of deprescribing in the pharmacy curriculum. This qualitative study was conducted with student pharmacists enrolled in three Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) programs in the US. The participants, all student pharmacists at the time of the study, were identified via an email requesting their voluntary participation in a focus group study. The focus groups were conducted via an online platform over three months in 2022, and recruitment continued until thematic saturation was obtained. Using thematic analysis, the corpus of the transcribed data was imported into Dedoose®, a qualitative software that facilitated the analysis. Three themes emerged from the data: (1) the importance of deprescribing; (2) barriers to deprescribing; (3) education recommendations. The data highlight that the student pharmacists believe integrating deprescribing content into the clinical, didactic, and simulation education would help them overcome the identified obstacles. Colleges of pharmacy should consider emphasizing the importance of deprescribing in their curriculum, creating programs to assist future pharmacists in addressing the barriers to deprescribing, and adopting the suggested educational strategies to improve the deprescribing education that is offered.

BACKGROUND: The uptake of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) has revolutionized the fight against the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic. Consistent obstacles remain that have influenced the slow uptake of PrEP in the United States of America (USA). In order to address these barriers, pharmacists must be included in the dispensing and management of PrEP through collaborative pharmacy practice agreements (CPPAs). Our aim for this study was to characterize pharmacists' perceptions of initiating PrEP through a CPPA in the state of Tennessee. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in the USA in 2021 with pharmacists practicing in Tennessee. A framework and specific questions guided the thematic analysis. The words and phrases were coded inductively and later collapsed into categories and placed into emergent themes. RESULTS: Two themes illustrate the voices of practicing pharmacists' integration in the dispensing and management of PrEP: (1) Learning from other states and previous successful CPPAs to advance and expand innovative models of patient care and (2) advocacy through public policy change to empower pharmacists to initiate PrEP. CONCLUSION: This qualitative study focused on exploring pharmacists' perceptions on the opportunity of initiating PrEP through a CPPA in Tennessee. These findings highlight the preparedness of pharmacists to advocate for easier initiative of PrEP in pharmacies across Tennessee, whether through relaxing existing CPPA regulation or pursuing independent prescriptive authority for pharmacists.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that stigma impacts the care provided to individuals with Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), but perceptions of SUDs in various healthcare training programs are not well known. We aimed to characterize perceptions of faculty, staff, and students about SUD stigma in professional healthcare training programs. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of faculty, staff, and students employed at or enrolled in one of six health-related colleges at one Mid-South health science center in the United States, including medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, health professions, and graduate health sciences. Data collection occurred between February and March 2021. We used descriptive and frequency statistics to assess the constructs within the survey instrument. RESULTS: A total of 572 respondents participated in this study (response rate = 9%; students, n = 428, 75%; faculty, n = 107, 19%; staff, n = 32, 6%). Most respondents reported interacting with persons with a SUD, cited challenges with the interaction, and perceived SUDs to be mental health condition (n = 463) or biological disease (n = 326). Most respondents believed that their college: emphasizes learning about SUDs; promotes an accurate perception of SUDs; and fosters respect for persons with. Few respondents reported they hear faculty, staff, or students express negative comments about persons with SUDs, but they were sometimes expressed by students. CONCLUSIONS: Most faculty, staff, and students reported experiencing challenges when interacting with a person with a SUD, mainly communication, but few recalled hearing negative comments from their peers. Whether interventions tailored towards improving communication in academic healthcare training settings could minimize challenges experience by faculty, staff, and students when serving individuals with SUDs should be further evaluated.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective treatment to combat the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) endemic, but the uptake of PrEP has been low in the United States (U.S.). While individuals may access PrEP via obtaining a prescription from their prescriber and having it dispensed by their pharmacist, less cumbersome access points may exist. This systematic literature review evaluates qualitative literature to explore the role of pharmacists, pharmacy services, and interprofessional collaborations for persons seeking PrEP in the United States. Four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and Embase) were searched in February 2022 and yielded 3841 results. After excluding duplicates, two researchers reviewed 2461 studies. These results were screened for inclusion and exclusion criteria and yielded 71 studies for full review. Out of these 71 studies, five studies met the pre-selected inclusion criteria. Of the five studies, four were qualitative studies, and one was a mixed-methods study. The studies examined different aspects of initiating PrEP and diverse outcomes, such as screening for PrEP, barriers to access PrEP, feasibility to access PrEP, accessibility via community pharmacy to PrEP, and interdisciplinary collaboration between members of the healthcare team to expand patient access to PrEP. A gap in the qualitative literature focusing on U.S. pharmacists' roles in initiation and provision of PrEP for diverse populations may exist. While PrEP promotion and uptake are largely affected by convenience and accessibility, future interventions and strategies should include training pertaining to PrEP screening, stigma reduction, privacy considerations, and PrEP dispensing.

The pharmacy education and its educators have to expose the student pharmacists to a plethora of activities regarding health disparities. It is essential for student pharmacists to be introduced to the key elements that comprise the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) during their didactic curriculum. However, while there have been efforts made in the United States to incorporate the SDOH in the pharmacy curricula, there is limited research on student pharmacists' perspectives of how content in the didactic curriculum prepared them to provide patient care. A quantitative approach was used for this study. For the Class of 2023, activities were added to a skills-based course series and a professional development course series to introduce, apply, and illustrate how SDOH can impact pharmacist-provided care and patient health experiences. As part of the College's assessment plan, a survey is sent to the third-year student pharmacists in January prior to beginning Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs). The online survey consists of 24 Likert Scale questions with five choices ranging from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree and not applicable. Four of the 24 questions pertained to health disparities and SDOH and were evaluated in this study. The responses were analyzed using SPSS for Windows, version 25.0 (IBM Corporation, Armonk, NY, USA). Descriptive statistics were calculated for all variables. Chi-square tests were used for all nominal data and Mann-Whitney test was used for all nonparametric numeric data. A total of 530 student pharmacists completed the survey. The mean age was 26 years and majority of the respondents identified as female (64%). More students strongly agreed that they had the ability to identify and address SDOH to improve access to or the delivery of healthcare in the class of 2023 (51.4%) compared to the class of 2022 (37.8%) and class of 2021 (35.8%). In addition, the mean survey score for the question between the class of 2023 improved significantly compared to the class of 2022 (p = 0.015) and 2021 (p = 0.004). Overall, this study suggests that longitudinal activities involving SDOH can improve student pharmacists' assessment of their abilities to interact with and care for a diverse patient population. The results suggest that the curriculum activities implemented to address a plethora of patients improve student assessment of their abilities to identify and incorporate SDOH in providing patient-centered care.

BACKGROUND: The majority of patients with a substance use disorder (SUD) in the United States do not receive evidence-based treatment. Research has also demonstrated challenges to accessing SUD care in the US criminal justice system. We conducted a systematic review of access to SUD care in the US criminal justice system. METHODS: We searched for comprehensive qualitative studies in multiple databases through April 2021, and two researchers reviewed 6858 studies using pre-selected inclusion criteria. Once eligibility was determined, themes were extracted from the data. This review provides a thematic overview of the US qualitative studies to inform future research-based interventions. This review was conducted in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). RESULTS: There were 6858 unique abstract results identified for review, and seven qualitative studies met the inclusion criteria. Two themes were identified from these results: (1) managing withdrawal from medication-assisted treatment, and (2) facilitators and barriers to treatment programs in the criminal justice system. CONCLUSIONS: Qualitative research evaluating access to SUD care in the US criminal justice system varied, with some interventions reported not rooted in evidence-based medicine. An opportunity may exist to develop best practices to ensure evidence-based treatment for SUDs is delivered to patients who need it in the US criminal justice system.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is recommended to prevent the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Although an effective treatment, the uptake in the United States remains low. Pharmacists are well-positioned to initiate the conversation with patients about PrEP, but few studies exist exploring their unique roles. The objective of this study was to characterize Tennessee pharmacists' perceptions about access to PrEP. A qualitative study was used to gather the data that consisted of virtual Focus Groups over four months in 2021 from practicing Tennessee pharmacists. Emails were sent to all Tennessee licensed pharmacists to recruit them to participate in the study. Recruitment continued until Thematic Saturation was obtained. The corpus of data was audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by the research team. Thematic Analysis revealed two themes: (1) Barriers to accessing PrEP; (2) Potential solutions to address barriers identified. These findings highlighted barriers and identified solutions to improve access to PrEP in Tennessee; additional financial assistance programs and marketing programs targeting patients and providers are needed to enhance PrEP access.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults often manage multiple medications simultaneously, contributing to significant pill burden. Pill burden is a major concern for both patients and providers alike, and student pharmacists may play a role in decreasing that burden. Few studies exist evaluating student pharmacists' roles in and perceptions of deprescribing in the healthcare team. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore student pharmacist perceptions regarding deprescribing in their pharmacy curricula. METHODS: This study used a focus group discussion (FGD) methodology to facilitate discussion on deprescribing among student pharmacists. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) informed the conceptualization of this study, data collection, and thematic analysis. Student pharmacists enrolled in three different colleges of pharmacy across various geographical regions of the U.S. were recruited to participate in the study. Data collection occurred in the Fall of 2021, and recruitment proceeded until thematic saturation was achieved. The audio recordings were transcribed verbatim, and the transcripts were uploaded into Dedoose®, a qualitative software that facilitated the data analysis. The inductive codes were grouped into categories based on similarities that resulted in the themes. RESULTS: Three colleges, totaling 1366 student pharmacists across different geographic regions of the U.S., were invited to participate in this study (UTHSC, N = 682; UNE, N = 158, University of Arizona, N = 526). Twenty-six student pharmacists participated in four FGDs. Of 26 participants, fourteen self-identified as male and two declined to state their gender identity. The mean age was 24 years old, with participants ranging from 21 to 37 years old. Thematic analysis revealed two major themes: (1) student pharmacists indicated that they possessed limited information about the deprescribing process, which is best illustrated by the following quote: "I think deprescribing as a whole is a gap!"; and (2) student pharmacists recommended increasing emphasis on deprescribing in pharmacy curricula. CONCLUSIONS: Student pharmacists identified few educational experiences on deprescribing in their curriculum while demonstrating a strong desire for more emphasis on deprescribing in the pharmacy curricula. This study highlights an opportunity to improve the integration of deprescribing education into pharmacy curricula, and colleges of pharmacy should evaluate whether, where, and to what extent the incorporation of this topic into their curricula is appropriate.
